When looking for a capable, dependable, and off-roading SUV for your family, it’s hard to outdo a Jeep. The 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4×4 brings the heritage of Jeep together with a competitively-priced mid-size SUV.

In 2014, the Cherokee sold more than 2 million units, proving it’s a popular mid-size model in the Jeep lineup. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with mid-size utility vehicle, and wish we had more time to have fun in this five-person SUV.

2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Exterior

Jeep has extended the popular design of the Grand Cherokee into the smaller sibling, using the sloping seven-slot grille in front. Aggressive bi-xenon HID headlights offer superior visibility and good looks too. Its small footprint offers nimble driving for narrow city roads while maintaining confidence in off-road ability.

Our tester came in Billet Silver Metallic Clear Coat paint which shined like a gem when the sun came out. It comes with a choice of 17- and 18-inch wheels with all-season tires.

2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Interior

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee has a durable and comfortable interior. Our tester came with Black and Light Frost interior colors. It has a leather-wrapped steering wheel that can become heated with the cold weather package add-on. The front passenger seat folds flat, and even has storage under the center cushion.

The infotainment system is an 8.4 Uconnect touchscreen with an all-new drag-and-drop menu for customized, easy access. Siri Eyes-Free and Bluetooth connectivity are included as standard. Our tester Cherokee had the Uconnect 8.4 system featuring navigation, and a remote USB port. There’s also the $1,925 comfort/convenience package which adds Sirius XM radio for one year, has power-adjustable seats (eight-way driver and four-way passenger), a power liftgate, a remote start that’s wonderful in cold weather, and a slew of other handy features.

2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Engine and Capability

The Jeep Cherokee has two choices in engine: 3.2L Pentastar V6 24-valve VVT engine putting down 271 HP, and a 2.4L MutliAir2 Tigershark inline four-cylinder creating 184 HP. We had the V6 and it’s an excellent engine — quick to get up and go, and easy to handle.

It has a nine-speed automatic transmission featuring all sorts of 4×4 technology. Active Drive I is a package for the Cherokee Latitude and offers a single power transfer unit to drive in 4×4 mode at any speed. It corrects yaw, and improves understeer and oversteer.

The rear-axle will disconnect and switch between two- and four-wheel drive mode without needing input from the driver. The 2017 Jeep Cherokee also has a towing capacity of 4,500 pounds when fitted with the V6 engine.

2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Safety

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee has more than 70 safety features, depending on the packages selected. Some of the safety items include 10 airbags, a chassis made of 65 percent high-strength steel, and all-speed traction control.

ParkSense for parallel and perpendicular parking, electronic roll mitigation, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross path detection are part of the safety/convenience package group.

2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Overall

For an MSRP of $34,475, the 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude is one marvelous mid-sized SUV. The base price of the Cherokee Latitude is $27,545, but we found the safety/convenience, cold weather, comfort /convenience, and Uconnect 8.4 groups to be essential options. The engine upgrade package is a $1,745 increase from the base model, but well worth it for the increased ability of the Cherokee.
